Hyperthermia Enhances Efficacy of Chemotherapeutic Agents in Pancreatic Cancer Cell Lines

To further understand the biological effects of hyperthermia (HT) at cellular level, experiments were conducted with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) cell lines.

The induction of cell death through apoptosis was seen after 6 h of treatment proving the direct cytotoxic effect of hyperthermia as monotherapy.

Moreover, HT administered in combination with chemotherapy potentiates the cancer cell killing effect without impairing the viability of healthy cells. Indeed, experiments demonstrated an additive or synergistic effect when using the optimal thermal and drug dose.

“Systematic review of the registered clinical trials for oncological hyperthermia treatment”, International Journal of Hyperthermia”, Vol. 39, No. 1, 806-812

This article was written to provide a summary of recent research performed on hyperthermia (HT) to treat cancer. In July 2020 ClinicalTrials.gov was used to search all clinical trials about this topic that were conducted between 2000 and 2020 and were investigational studies. Out of 1654 identified studies, 235 were included for further analysis. All of these 235 studies were categorized under hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC)(52.3%), other regional HT types (18.7%), local HT (19.1%) and whole-body HT (6.4%), respectively. An evolution over all the different HT technologies was observed during the past decades. Research on HT to treat cancer has expanded fast, but more uniform data on efficacy, before moving towards daily clinical application, is required.
